A tincture is a concentrated liquid form of an herb that is easy to make and easy to take. Tinctures preserve and concentrate the properties of the herb, making them more effective and longer lasting.
Alcohol based tinctures have a shelf life of several years and are easy to use when needed!
Although there are many advantages of using alcohol such as vodka or brandy to make herbal tinctures , some people prefer to avoid the use of alcohol for it. Vinegar extracts are not as potent as alcohol-based tinctures, so the doses are higher. Vinegar does not extract as much beneficial components of a herb as alcohol, but it is excellent in terms of the minerals and vitamins of a plant.
How to prepare vinegar extract:
The formula is one part dried herbs for 7 parts vinegar.
Place this measure in a jar (use a plastic cap or waxed paper between the jar and the metal lid because the vinegar will eat the metal and spoil everything). Cap the jar well, shake and store in a cool and dark place to macerate for about two or three weeks, shaking the bottle daily.
Using dry herbs, they usually make the extract stronger than if fresh herbs are used.
The vinegar extracts are preserved for about 6 weeks.
How to use the vinegar extract:
Taking two or three tablespoons up to five times a day is the usual dose. You can consume it mixed with water or juice.
You can also use it as a mouthwash.
How to make oxymel:
The oxymel is a bittersweet herbal syrup. This syrup contains vinegar, honey and herbs.
Measures and procedure for syrup:
Fill a small jar in half or three quarters with herbs. Pour the honey and then the vinegar. Approximately 1/3 of the jar with honey and 2/3 with vinegar and leave it for 2 weeks, shaking the jar daily.
After that time strain the mixture and store it in a cool place or in the refrigerator.
Another way to prepare the syrup: Simmer the herbs and vinegar for ten or twenty minutes. Strain and add the honey, while the vinegar is still hot.
This syrup is well preserved for about a year.
You can take spoonful’s of this syrup as needed, for sore throat, congestion, coughing or as a treatment to combat cold symptoms and respiratory problems.
Here are some herbs that you can use according to what you want to treat:
- Rosemary: Acts against poor circulation, is good for digestion and for nerves.
- Sage: It is antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral.
- Thyme: Useful against upper respiratory tract infections, cough and bronchitis. It is antiviral and antibacterial.
- Oregano: Antibacterial, antiviral, and useful for upper respiratory tract infections
- Ginger, Garlic and Onion: Make a tonic to fight the cold and flu.
- Monarda: Effective against sore throat, fever and cough.
- Mint: Helps with digestion and stomach problems.
- Elderflower: Stimulates the immune system and softens sore throat.
- Raspberry Leaves: Make tonic for women.
- Lemon peel: They can be added to give flavor.
