breast cancer risk

In addition to skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer affecting women in America.

Approximately 1 in 8 women (12%) of the US will develop an invasive form of breast cancer in their lifetime. Because of this, any people turn to both conventional and alternative treatments to prevent breast cancer.

However, many people develop breast cancer long before becoming aware of it.

And the more time that passes without treatment, the chances of successfully overcome decreases.

Therefore, it is extremely important to do everything you can to prevent the risk of developing breast cancer, so we will show the foods that should be consumed to achieve it.

According to Suzanne Dixon, dietician and epidemiologist, eating a variety of plant foods is necessary for the prevention of breast cancer and overall breast health. Here are some of those foods:

  1. Legumes

Legumes, including beans and lentils, have their anti-cancer benefits because of some natural compounds called “phytosterols”. A study led by researchers at Harvard University found that women who ate vegetables at least 2 times a week had a 24% lower risk of developing breast cancer, compared to women who only consumed less than once a month.

  1. Mushrooms

Breast cancer thrives on estrogen. When you do not have a supply of natural estrogen, it uses an enzyme called “aromatase” to create synthetic estrogen. Fungi are effective in preventing this estrogen synthesis because they decrease the aromatase activity.

In a 2009 study, conducted in China, scientists found that women who consumed 10 or more grams of fresh mushrooms, had reduced the risk of breast cancer by 64%.

Fungi or mushrooms: crimini, oyster ChampiƱon, enoki, shiitake, Portobello, Chanterelle, woodear, Italian Brown, all of them have anti-cancer breast properties.

  1. Nuts

“All varieties are rich in phytosterols, which has been shown in animal studies to inhibit tumor development,” says Dixon.

A study published in the journal “Nutrition and Cancer” found that nuts contain bio-active anti-cancer properties of molecules. Scientists also discovered that applying a serum derived from nuts, decreased cell growth of breast cancer when they were applied directly into a Petri dish.

  1. Cruciferous vegetables

This group includes most crisp, such as broccoli, cabbage, kale, and Brussels sprouts vegetables. The anti-cancer properties of these vegetables come from their natural component called “glucosinolate”. During the digestion process, glucosinolates are chemically decomposed to become active compounds, as “indoles”, “nitriles”, “thiocyanates” and “isothiocyanate”. It has been shown that these compounds have anti-cancer properties in many types of cancer, not only the breast cancer.

Many studies have shown that women who eat cruciferous vegetables have a lower risk of developing breast cancer.

Factors that increase the risk of Breast Cancer

In addition to eating foods that you know that reduce the risk of developing breast cancer, it is also a good idea to avoid the many circumstances that increase the risk of developing it. Here is a list of factors associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer:

  • – Being overweight.
  • – Not exercising.
  • – High intake of saturated fat.
  • – Consuming Oral Contraceptives.
  • – Lack of sleep.
  • – The use of cosmetics and other products containing “Parabens”.
  • – Genetic disposition.

Although there are some factors that increase the risk, you can not change the fact of living a healthy life, have an active lifestyle and eating a variety of fruits, vegetables and legumes, it is the best way to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer.
